An empty mind is a safe mind.

Yulia's father always taught her to hide her thoughts and control her emotions to survive the harsh realities of Soviet Russia. But when she's captured by the KGB and forced to work as a psychic spy with a mission to undermine the U.S. space program, she's thrust into a world of suspicion, deceit, and horrifying power. Yulia quickly realizes she can trust no one--not her KGB superiors or the other operatives vying for her attention--and must rely on her own wits and skills to survive in this world where no SEKRET can stay hidden for long.

A good friend of Jessica and I's named Jeni will be doing 2 guest reviews for this month!  Here's the first one!  Enjoy!

Historical and Sci fi filled YA is a new genre for me, but this book didn't disappoint. Be warned though, it may not be for everyone. I like Russian history, though I prefer turn of the last century to the Cold War Era in which this book is set. That been said, while reading you won't be bogged down with a history or politics lesson. In fact I felt caught up and pulled along with the events and enjoyed reading things from a Russian point view.

The tempo of the story was well structured with peaks and troughs of action and emotion. I found it compelling, but not enough to keep me up for a single sitting read.

The characters are frustrating with their hidden Sekrets and motives, but that is what they need to be in a spy novel. Distrust, double motives, lies and deceit all round. Not recommended for those who trust easily. Couple of leading men, a possible best friend/side kick and some supporting characters to add the snark and banter a well rounded cast.

Sekret was an enjoyable YA sci fi spy novel that may have you checking rooms for bugs and wondering who is listening to your thoughts. It certainly wont leave you with an empty mind. Grab it to read in intervals; great for a commute or a few chapters before bed.
