Blog Tour: The Forgotten Ones by Laura Howard Review + Giveaway

The Forgotten Ones by Laura Howard
(The Danaan Trilogy, #1)
Release Date: April 30, 2013
Publisher: Self; 177
Allison O'Malley's plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she's been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison's mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn't trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother's sanity.

I wanted to really love this book, I did but I just couldn't. I enjoyed it enough to make me want to read the next book but there were just some things that I couldn't overlook. Such as the lack of romance. For a New Adult novel, I was thoroughly disappointed. Not that I'm expecting people getting it on every other page or anything but there is more romance in Young Adult novels that what I found in this. I also feel like the relationship between Ethan and Allison just kept going around in circles. We absolutely got nowhere with either of them; that frustrated me to no end. The writing I found to be a bit choppy - with a little more editing, it could definitely be a lot better. The book could've been longer and definitely had more to it. I was anticipating a greater climax and the book just . . . ended.

I know, that first paragraph is a lot to digest but like I said, I didn't hate this book; I quite enjoyed the idea of it and it's potential. Allison is pretty much a loner who enjoys being with her family and good book rather than surrounded by friends her own age. She lives in a tight knit community with her best friend being her neighbor and cousin, Nicole. Her mother is schizophrenic and her health has practically decline since Allison's birth, nearly twenty two years ago. She's never met her father but knows what he looks like and that her mother had met him in Ireland while she study abroad. She's never had a boyfriend but basically been in love with her friend and resident hottie, Ethan whose mother happens to be her mother's best friend. Well, she was before her health decline; Joanne (Ethan's mother) still comes over at least once a week to visit her, though.

We see Allison's struggle with her growing feelings for Ethan and his persistance at getting her to go out with him. It's pretty apparent that he's had feelings for her for quite some time but she's never agreed to go out with him. We also witness Allison's mothers health decline even more and how badly it effects Al. The best thing is the entrance of her mysteriously absent father, Liam and the secrets he carries with him.

*highlight to view spoiler* One thing I just can't wrap my head around is how Ethan or anyone was never able to piece together that Liam and Allison are related, in some way. She mentions multiple times how she is basically a carbon copy of her father and if they stand next to each other, wouldn't some one notice the similarities? I know he doesn't age but wouldn't they at least think he was a cousin or something? I'm under the impression that Ethan's under the impression Liam might be something more than a friend? *end spoiler*

I would recommend this to fans of fae books, fans of indie/self-pub books or just fans looking for something new. If you're looking for a new, steamy NA book this isn't for you. A few times I thought it might have gotten a little steamy and the chapter would just conclude with me wanting more. I will definitely read the second book because I do like the characters and I am curious what will happen.

Thanks so much to Shane from Itching for Books and Laura Howard for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour & in exchange for an honest review.

Laura Howard lives in New Hampshire with her husband and four children. Her obsession with books began at the age of 6 when she got her first library card. Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High and other girly novels were routinely devoured in single sittings. Books took a backseat to diapers when she had her first child. It wasn’t until the release of a little novel called Twilight, 8 years later, that she rediscovered her love of fiction. Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known. The Forgotten Ones is her first published novel.
